Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Six Techniques
1. Defusion
Defusion is one of the six components learnt in ACT. Defusion is where we separate ourselves from our thoughts, instead of being fused to them. Another way to say it is to "looks at them, instead of from them"

2. Acceptance
Acceptance is not saying what you are struggling with is good or right, instead it is asking us to acceptance what we do not want in order to be the way we want to be.

3. Present Moment
The third skill is being present in the moment and not lost somewhere in thought. For example, worrying about the future or dwelling about the past, instead of actually being engaged with whats happening in front of you. This is important beacuse whats actually happening in the present moment is usually not distressing. We could be sitting at a coffee shop and our thoughts suddenly sweep us away.

4. Self as Context
Self as context is the fourth skill. Here, our aim is to develop a space between you and your experience. To see your internal and external experience from a persecptive or vantage point that is observing things with less attachment (fused). The idea here is that the more we see life from a separation, the less vulnerable we are to them. This is important because not all thoughts and feelings should be followed blindly, but that can be difficult when we are "hooked" by them.

5. Values
The fifth skill are values that we purposely place importance in at any given time. Values give us meaning or purpose in goals that we create for ourselves and the way we want to be in the present moment.
For example, imagine you are driving home and you want to be calm while on your way home, but all of a sudden unwanted anxious thoughts start coming up. You can defuse and accept those unwanted thoughts, because youd rather be calm.

6. Do What Matters
Goals (do what matters) is the last skill in ACT and is where we find our "path" or direction that we want to head down. Goals can help us move towards whats important to us and give us that sense of fulfilment. Goals that are based in values can offer us strength to accpet the unwanted for the path that we want to go down. Without a path it might be more difficult to accept the things we hate or fear.
